Peter Birmann
Maestro svizzero del paesaggio
Peter Birmann fu un pittore svizzero. Iniziò la sua formazione presso suo padre Rudolph, scalpellino, e poi continuò nelle botteghe di vari artisti svizzeri: Rudolf Huber il giovane nel 1771, August Kaufmann a Porrentruy, nella bottega Wagner a Berna, presso Marquard Wocher e infine con Johann Ludwig Aberli. Nel 1777 intraprese un viaggio a Roma, dove soggiornò tra il 1781 e il 1790. Lavorò nello studio del suo compatriota e pittore Abraham-Louis-Rodolphe Ducros e poi si trovò alla guida della bottega dell'incisore italiano Giovanni Volpato. Durante questo soggiorno, incontrò il poeta tedesco Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Si specializzò in disegni di paesaggi e incisioni. Suo figlio Samuel Birmann (1793-1847) è anch'egli un pittore paesaggista.
