Peter Newell
Ilustrador innovador de libros infantiles
Peter Sheaf Hersey Newell fue un artista y escritor estadounidense. Creó libros ilustrados e ilustró nuevas ediciones de muchos libros infantiles. Originario del condado de McDonough, Illinois, Newell se labró una reputación en las décadas de 1880 y 1890 por sus dibujos humorísticos y poemas, que aparecieron en Harper's Weekly, Harper's Bazaar, Scribner's Magazine, The Saturday Evening Post, Judge y otras publicaciones. Más tarde escribió e ilustró varios libros infantiles populares, como Topsys and Turvys (1893), una colección de poemas e imágenes que podían verse al revés o del derecho; The Hole Book (1908), que tenía un agujero literal en el centro de cada página para indicar la trayectoria de una bala; y The Slant Book (1910), que tenía forma de romboide y contaba la historia de un cochecito de bebé que se precipitaba colina abajo. Newell ilustraba a menudo las obras de otros autores, como Mark Twain, Stephen Crane, John Kendrick Bangs y Lewis Carroll. También creó una serie de tiras cómicas, The Naps of Polly Sleepyhead, que debutó en el New York Herald en 1905. Murió en Little Neck, Nueva York, en 1924.
