Pier Leone Ghezzi
Rococo-schilder en satirisch karikaturist
Pier Leone Ghezzi was een Italiaanse rococoschilder en karikaturist die actief was in Rome. Ghezzi werd geboren en stierf in Rome. Hij werd opgeleid door zijn vader, Giuseppe Ghezzi, die ook Antonio Amorosi opleidde. Zijn vader was secretaris van de Romeinse Accademia di San Luca, en Pier Leone trad toe tot de Academie in 1705. Zijn proefschilderij, de Allegorie van Dankbaarheid, werd zoals gebruikelijk aan de instelling geschonken voor zijn toelating. Hij schilderde voor diverse kerken, zoals de Cappuccini in Frascati en San Onofrio in Urbino. Hij was het peetkind van Carlo Maratta. Pier Leone staat bekend om zijn fresco's in de Villa Falconieri in Frascati. Als schilder veranderde zijn stijl door de jaren heen aanzienlijk, soms onder invloed van de Franse portretkunst. His pen and gouache caricatures are much freer in emotion than his state portraiture, and were much admired. They often depict named individuals or professions in satirical fashion. Ghezzi made an extensive and eclectic use of drawings and watercolors. Recent scientific discoveries include watercolors reproducing stones and marbles, which were in 1727 collected in a manuscript named "Studio di molte pietre", i.e. Collection of different stones, currently preserved at the Biblioteca Alessandrina of Rome.
