Pieter de Hooch
Maestro della luce domestica
Pieter de Hooch fu un pittore olandese dell’Età dell’Oro, famoso per le sue opere di genere che raffigurano quiete scene domestiche con una porta aperta. Fu contemporaneo di Jan Vermeer nella Gilda di San Luca di Delft, con il quale condivideva temi e stile. De Hooch nacque a Rotterdam da Hendrick Hendricksz de Hooch, un muratore, e Annetge Pieters, una levatrice. Era il maggiore di cinque figli e sopravvisse a tutti i suoi fratelli. Si sa poco della sua prima vita e la maggior parte delle prove d’archivio suggerisce che lavorò a Rotterdam, Delft e Amsterdam. Secondo il suo primo biografo Arnold Houbraken, studiò arte a Haarlem sotto il pittore paesaggista Nicolaes Berchem allo stesso tempo di Jacob Ochtervelt ed era noto per i suoi «kamergezichten» o «viste di stanze» con dame e gentiluomini in conversazione. Le prime opere di de Hooch erano per lo più composte da scene di soldati e contadini in stalle e taverne alla maniera di Adriaen van Ostade, sebbene le utilizzasse per sviluppare una grande abilità nella luce, nel colore e nella prospettiva piuttosto che per esplorare un interesse per il soggetto. Dopo aver messo su famiglia a metà degli anni 1650, spostò il suo focus sulle scene domestiche. Queste potrebbero rappresentare la sua stessa famiglia, sebbene le sue opere di donne benestanti che allattano e si prendono cura dei bambini potrebbero anche indicare che aveva accompagnato sua madre nei suoi giri come levatrice.
