Pieter Fransz. de Grebber
Pioniere del classicismo di Haarlem
Pieter Fransz de Grebber fu un pittore olandese dell'Età dell'Oro. De Grebber nacque ad Haarlem, figlio primogenito di Frans Pietersz de Grebber (1573–1643), pittore e ricamatore ad Haarlem, e fratello dei pittori Maria e Albert. Imparò a dipingere da suo padre e da Hendrick Goltzius. Discendeva da una famiglia cattolica e artistica, e sua sorella Maria divenne in seguito la suocera di Gabriel Metsu. Era amico del sacerdote e musicologo Jan Albertszoon Ban, e una poesia fu messa in musica dal compositore di Haarlem Cornelis Padbrué. Nel 1632 divenne membro della Gilda di San Luca di Haarlem, ma era già attivo come pittore da 10 anni. I suoi allievi furono Gerbrand Ban, Nicolaes Pietersz Berchem, Egbert van Heemskerck e Dirck Helmbreeker. Nel 1618, padre e figlio si recarono ad Anversa e negoziarono con Pietro Paolo Rubens la vendita del suo dipinto Daniele nella fossa dei leoni. L'opera fu poi consegnata – tramite l'ambasciatore inglese presso la Repubblica, Sir Dudley Carleton – al re Carlo I. Pieter ricevette importanti commissioni non solo a Haarlem, ma anche dallo statolder Federico Enrico. Besides history paintings, Pieter de Grebber also painted a number of portraits; furthermore many drawings and a few etchings by him have survived. From different influences, such as the Utrecht Caravaggistism, Rubens and also Rembrandt, he came up with a very personal style. He was, together with Salomon de Bray, the forerunner and first peak of the "Haarlem classicism" school, producing paintings characterized by a well-organized clarity and light tints. Nel 1649, De Grebber scrisse il trattato «Regulen welcke by een goet Schilder en Teyckenaar geobserveert en achtervolght moeten werden» (Regole che un buon pittore e maestro del disegno devono osservare). In questo documento egli spiega le undici regole più importanti che, a suo parere, i pittori classicisti dovrebbero osservare con attenzione. Sebbene i classicisti non giurassero su tali regole, queste furono comunque sempre rigorosamente osservate. Quasi tutte queste regole sono tratte dal «Schilder-boeck» manierista di Karel van Mander, nel quale la pittura storica era presentata come la più alta nella gerarchia dei generi.
