Pieter van der Werff fue un pintor neerlandés del Siglo de Oro. Asistió a su hermano mayor, Adriaen van der Werff. Aprendió a pintar de su hermano Adriaen y, según el RKD, pasó la mayor parte de su vida trabajando en Róterdam, donde pintó a los ricos y famosos. Existen posibles indicios de que podría haber viajado a Inglaterra para buscar encargos, ya que dos retratos pintados hacia 1709, atribuidos a un «caballero desconocido» y a una «mujer desconocida», cuelgan en la Victoria Art Gallery de Bath. Sus títulos alternativos son «John Churchill, primer duque de Marlborough» y «Sarah, duquesa de Marlborough». Mientras estaba en Inglaterra, es posible que recibiera encargos de la familia Fairfax, una antigua familia católica de Yorkshire que poseía extensas tierras y propiedades en el condado.
