Pieter van der Werff fu un pittore olandese dell'Età dell'Oro. Assistette suo fratello maggiore, Adriaen van der Werff. Imparò a dipingere da suo fratello Adriaen e, secondo il RKD, trascorse la maggior parte della sua vita lavorando a Rotterdam, dove ritrasse i ricchi e i famosi. Vi sono possibili prove che potrebbe aver viaggiato in Inghilterra per cercare commissioni, poiché due ritratti dipinti intorno al 1709, attribuiti a un «gentiluomo sconosciuto» e a una «donna sconosciuta», sono esposti alla Victoria Art Gallery di Bath. I loro titoli alternativi sono «John Churchill, primo duca di Marlborough» e «Sarah, duchessa di Marlborough». Durante il suo soggiorno in Inghilterra, potrebbe aver ricevuto commissioni dalla famiglia Fairfax, un'antica famiglia cattolica dello Yorkshire che possedeva vaste terre e proprietà nella contea.
