Pieter van der Werff foi um pintor holandês da Idade de Ouro. Ele auxiliou seu irmão mais velho, Adriaen van der Werff. Ele aprendeu a pintar com seu irmão Adriaen e, de acordo com o RKD, passou a maior parte de sua vida trabalhando em Roterdã, onde pintou os ricos e famosos. Há possíveis evidências de que ele possa ter viajado para a Inglaterra em busca de encomendas, pois dois retratos pintados por volta de 1709, atribuídos a um «cavalheiro desconhecido» e a uma «mulher desconhecida», estão pendurados na Victoria Art Gallery em Bath. Seus títulos alternativos são «John Churchill, primeiro Duque de Marlborough» e «Sarah, Duquesa de Marlborough». Enquanto estava na Inglaterra, é possível que tenha recebido encomendas da família Fairfax, uma antiga família católica de Yorkshire que possuía extensas terras e propriedades no condado.
