Raffaello Sorbi was een Florentijnse schilder uit de 19e en 20e eeuw, gespecialiseerd in narratieve schilderkunst. As a young man, he studied design in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Florence; then painting under professor Antonio Ciseri. By 18 years, he had completed his first major work: Corso Donati mortally wounded is transported by Monks of San Salvi to their Abbey (see gallery). The painting won an award at the Florentine Triennale contest of 1861. He completed commissions for patrons in America and England. In 1863, he won a contest in Rome with the essay piece Savonarola explains the Bible to some friends in the Convent of San Marco. He was unable to make use of the stipend attached to the prize. In Florence, he exhibited a work depicting Piccarda Donati kidnapped from the Convent of Santa Chiara, by her brother Corso. He completed a St Catherine of Siena before an angry Florentine mob after concluding peace with the Pope, by commission for signore marchese Carlo Torrigiani. His painting of Imelda de' Lambertazzi e Bonifazio Geremei (lovers from Donizetti's opera) was sold to Wilhelm Metzler of Frankfort, Germany. In 1869, the sculptor Giovanni Duprè visited his studio, and commissioned a Phidias sculpts the Minerva Statue. Na dit werk produceerde Sorbi voornamelijk kleine doeken, meestal verkocht via de Goupil Gallery in Parijs. Veel werken stellen de Romeinse oudheid (neo-Pompeiaans) of het historische Toscaanse verleden voor: Regatta op de Arno: Il Girotondo; Il Decamerone; Het Florentijnse concert: Il Triclinio; De Vestalische maagden verlaten het amfitheater na de voorstelling: De verkoper van terracotta; Een familiescène onder een peristyl; Cornelia, moeder van Gaius en Tiberius Gracchus. Andere schilderijen zijn genrestukken in kleding en pronk van de 18e eeuw. Van zijn werken werden Lo Corsa delle carrette nel Circo en il serraglio agli sposi gekocht door de Silleys uit Londen, en Le Maggiolate werd gekocht door heer Egisto Vannucci uit Florence. Veel van zijn werken werden verworven door Engelse verzamelaars. Onder zijn werken is een reeks spellen, waaronder Il Giuoco delle Bocce, delle Carte, del Pallone, della Ruzzola en della Mora. Hij schilderde een Herstel van Dante. In 1870 toonde hij op de Mostra van Schone Kunsten in Parma La strada. Sorbi werd academicus aan het Koninklijk Instituut voor Schone Kunsten van Florence en resident professor en eregenoot van de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Urbino. Sorbi overleed op 19 december 1931 in Florence.
