Richard Ansdell fue un pintor británico de animales y escenas de género. Ansdell nació en Liverpool (entonces en Lancashire), hijo de Thomas Griffiths Ansdell, un hombre libre que trabajaba en el puerto, y de Anne Jackson. Su padre murió joven y Richard fue educado en la Liverpool Blue Coat School para huérfanos. Tenía un talento natural para el arte desde temprana edad, y después de dejar la escuela trabajó para un pintor de retratos en Chatham, en Kent, y también pasó tiempo como pintor de letreros en los Países Bajos. He first exhibited at the Liverpool Academy in 1835, becoming a student there the following year. His animal and rural subjects proved to be popular and he soon attracted wealthy patrons. His first exhibition at the Royal Academy, London, was in 1840, with two paintings called "Grouse shooting" and "A Galloway farm". This was followed, in 1841 by "The Earl of Sefton and party returning from hunting", in 1842 "The death of Sir William Lambton at the Battle of Marston Moor", in 1843 "The Death" and in 1844 "Mary Queen of Scots returning from the chase to Stirling Castle". He went on to exhibit pictures every year at the Academy until 1885 (149 canvases in all). In 1846 he exhibited his first picture, "A Drover's Halt" at the British Institution, London, and went on to show 30 canvases there. También trabajó con William Powell Frith («The Keeper's daughter») y con John Phillip, con quien viajó a España en 1856 y pintó una serie de temas españoles: «The Water Carrier», «The Road to Seville», «The Spanish shepherd», etc. Al año siguiente regresó solo a España para pintar más cuadros allí. En 1855, Andsell recibió una medalla de oro en la Exposición de París por sus obras «The Wolf Slyer» y «Taming the Drove». También ganó la «medalla Heywood» en tres ocasiones por su trabajo en la Royal Institution de Mánchester. Fue elegido Asociado de la Royal Academy (ARA) en 1861 y Académico Real (RA) en 1870. Durante parte de su carrera, mantuvo una «casa de verano» en Lytham St Annes, en el municipio de Fylde, donde un distrito, Ansdell, lleva su nombre. Es el único artista inglés que ha sido honrado de esta manera. Ansdell murió en «Collingwood Tower» en Farnborough, Hampshire, el 20 de abril de 1885. Fue enterrado en el cementerio de Brookwood.
