Richard Ansdell était un peintre britannique d'animaux et de scènes de genre. Ansdell est né à Liverpool (alors dans le Lancashire), fils de Thomas Griffiths Ansdell, un homme libre travaillant au port, et d'Anne Jackson. Son père est mort jeune et Richard a été éduqué à la Liverpool Blue Coat School pour orphelins. Il avait un talent naturel pour l'art dès son plus jeune âge, et après avoir quitté l'école, il a travaillé pour un peintre de portraits à Chatham dans le Kent, et a également passé du temps comme peintre d'enseignes aux Pays-Bas. He first exhibited at the Liverpool Academy in 1835, becoming a student there the following year. His animal and rural subjects proved to be popular and he soon attracted wealthy patrons. His first exhibition at the Royal Academy, London, was in 1840, with two paintings called "Grouse shooting" and "A Galloway farm". This was followed, in 1841 by "The Earl of Sefton and party returning from hunting", in 1842 "The death of Sir William Lambton at the Battle of Marston Moor", in 1843 "The Death" and in 1844 "Mary Queen of Scots returning from the chase to Stirling Castle". He went on to exhibit pictures every year at the Academy until 1885 (149 canvases in all). In 1846 he exhibited his first picture, "A Drover's Halt" at the British Institution, London, and went on to show 30 canvases there. En juin 1841, il épousa Maria Romer ; le couple eut ensuite 11 enfants. En 1847, la famille quitta Liverpool pour s'installer à Kensington, à Londres. En 1850, Ansdell commença à collaborer sur des tableaux avec Thomas Creswick, spécialisé dans les paysages (par exemple : « The South Downs », « England's day in the country », etc.). Il travailla également avec William Powell Frith (« The Keeper's daughter ») et John Phillip, avec qui il se rendit en Espagne en 1856 et peignit une série de sujets espagnols – « The Water Carrier », « The Road to Seville », « The Spanish shepherd », etc. L'année suivante, il retourna seul en Espagne pour y peindre davantage de tableaux. En 1855, Andsell a reçu une médaille d'or à l'Exposition de Paris pour ses œuvres « The Wolf Slyer » et « Taming the Drove ». Il a également remporté la « médaille Heywood » à trois reprises pour son travail à la Royal Institution de Manchester. Il a été élu associé de la Royal Academy (ARA) en 1861 et académicien royal (RA) en 1870. Pendant une partie de sa carrière, il a maintenu une « maison d'été » à Lytham St Annes, dans le borough de Fylde, où un quartier, Ansdell, porte son nom. Il est le seul artiste anglais à avoir été honoré de cette manière. Ansdell est mort à « Collingwood Tower » à Farnborough dans le Hampshire le 20 avril 1885. Il a été enterré au cimetière de Brookwood.
