Richard Ansdell era un pittore britannico di animali e scene di genere. Ansdell nacque a Liverpool (allora nel Lancashire), figlio di Thomas Griffiths Ansdell, un uomo libero che lavorava al porto, e di Anne Jackson. Suo padre morì giovane e Richard fu educato alla Liverpool Blue Coat School per orfani. Aveva un talento naturale per l'arte fin dalla tenera età e, dopo aver lasciato la scuola, lavorò per un pittore di ritratti a Chatham nel Kent, e trascorse anche del tempo come pittore di insegne nei Paesi Bassi. He first exhibited at the Liverpool Academy in 1835, becoming a student there the following year. His animal and rural subjects proved to be popular and he soon attracted wealthy patrons. His first exhibition at the Royal Academy, London, was in 1840, with two paintings called "Grouse shooting" and "A Galloway farm". This was followed, in 1841 by "The Earl of Sefton and party returning from hunting", in 1842 "The death of Sir William Lambton at the Battle of Marston Moor", in 1843 "The Death" and in 1844 "Mary Queen of Scots returning from the chase to Stirling Castle". He went on to exhibit pictures every year at the Academy until 1885 (149 canvases in all). In 1846 he exhibited his first picture, "A Drover's Halt" at the British Institution, London, and went on to show 30 canvases there. Nel giugno 1841 sposò Maria Romer; la coppia ebbe undici figli. Nel 1847 la famiglia lasciò Liverpool per trasferirsi a Kensington, a Londra. Nel 1850, Ansdell iniziò a collaborare alla realizzazione di dipinti con Thomas Creswick, specializzato in paesaggi (ad esempio: «The South Downs», «England's day in the country», ecc.). Lavorò anche con William Powell Frith («The Keeper's daughter») e John Phillip, con il quale viaggiò in Spagna nel 1856 e dipinse una serie di soggetti spagnoli – «The Water Carrier», «The Road to Seville», «The Spanish shepherd», ecc. L'anno seguente tornò da solo in Spagna per dipingere ulteriori opere. Nel 1855, Andsell ricevette una medaglia d'oro all'Esposizione di Parigi per le sue opere «The Wolf Slyer» e «Taming the Drove». Vinse anche la «medaglia Heywood» per tre volte per il suo lavoro presso la Royal Institution di Manchester. Fu eletto Associato della Royal Academy (ARA) nel 1861 e Accademico Reale (RA) nel 1870. Durante parte della sua carriera, ha mantenuto una «casa estiva» a Lytham St Annes, nel borgo di Fylde, dove un quartiere, Ansdell, prende il nome da lui. È l'unico artista inglese ad essere stato onorato in questo modo. Ansdell morì a «Collingwood Tower» a Farnborough nell'Hampshire il 20 aprile 1885. Fu sepolto nel cimitero di Brookwood.
