Richard Dighton

Richard Dighton fue un artista inglés del periodo de la Regencia, conocido principalmente por sus numerosos retratos de perfil satíricos de celebridades y personajes londinenses de su época. Era hijo y aprendiz de otro destacado caricaturista, Robert Dighton (1752–1814), y hermano del pintor de escenas de batalla Denis Dighton y de Robert Dighton junior. Las obras de Robert y Richard Dighton son consideradas precursoras del estilo de Vanity Fair de finales del siglo XIX. Su serie de retratos de la City y del West End comenzó en 1817, y publicó más de cien aguafuertes durante la década siguiente. A partir de 1828 no produjo más aguafuertes y se estableció y trabajó en Cheltenham y Worcester, donde pasó los siguientes veinte años, regresando después a Londres. Se centró primero en los retratos en acuarela y, después de 1835, en los retratos litográficos. Richard Dighton murió de «hipertrofia de próstata y enfermedad de Bright» en el 3 de Elm Grove, Hammersmith, el 13 de abril de 1880, a los 84 años. Sus hijos Richard junior y Joshua también eran retratistas.
