Richard Dighton

Richard Dighton foi um artista inglês do período da Regência, mais conhecido por seus muitos retratos de perfil satíricos de celebridades e personagens londrinos contemporâneos. Ele era filho e aprendiz de outro famoso caricaturista, Robert Dighton (1752–1814), e irmão do pintor de cenas de batalha Denis Dighton e de Robert Dighton junior. As obras de Robert e Richard Dighton são consideradas precursoras do estilo da Vanity Fair do final do século XIX. Sua série de retratos da City e do West End foi iniciada em 1817, e ele publicou mais de cem gravuras em água-forte na década seguinte. A partir de 1828, não produziu mais gravuras em água-forte e estabeleceu-se e trabalhou em Cheltenham e Worcester, onde passou os vinte anos seguintes, retornando depois a Londres. Concentrou-se primeiro em retratos em aquarela e, após 1835, em retratos litográficos. Richard Dighton morreu de «hiperplasia prostática e doença de Bright» no 3 Elm Grove, Hammersmith, em 13 de abril de 1880, aos 84 anos. Seus filhos Richard junior e Joshua também eram retratistas.
