Robert Anning Bell
Maestro del movimiento Arts and Crafts
Robert Anning Bell RA fue un artista y diseñador inglés. Robert Anning Bell nació en Londres el 14 de abril de 1862, hijo de Robert George Bell, un comerciante de quesos, y de Mary Charlotte Knight. Estudió en la University College School, en el Westminster College of Art y en las escuelas de la Royal Academy, seguido de una estancia en París. Bell fue aprendiz de arquitecto con su tío, Samuel Knight. A su regreso, compartió un estudio con George Frampton. Junto con Frampton, creó una serie de diseños para un retablo que fue exhibido en la Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society y más tarde instalado en la Iglesia de St. Clare en Liverpool. De 1895 a 1899, Bell fue instructor en la escuela de arquitectura de la Universidad de Liverpool. Durante este tiempo, se asoció con la cerámica Della Robbia en Birkenhead y también tuvo un éxito creciente como diseñador de libros e ilustrador. En 1911, Bell fue nombrado jefe de la sección de diseño en la Glasgow School of Art, y de 1918 a 1924 fue profesor de diseño en el Royal College of Art. Continuó pintando y exhibió en la Royal Academy, el New English Art Club y la Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours, así como en la primera exposición de la Society of Graphic Art en 1921. En 1921 fue elegido Maestro del Art Workers' Guild. Diseñó el gran mosaico en el tímpano de la Catedral de Westminster a partir de los bocetos dejados por el arquitecto John Francis Bentley; la obra se completó en 1916. Bell trabajó desde 1922 en mosaicos para el Palacio de Westminster. Representaciones de San Patricio de Irlanda y San Andrés de Escocia fueron erigidas en el vestíbulo central; en el Salón de San Esteban, se erigió un panel que representaba a San Esteban, el Rey Esteban y Eduardo el Confesor, y otro que mostraba a Eduardo III presentando el diseño de la Capilla de San Esteban a su maestro albañil, Michael de Canterbury. El último de estos mosaicos fue unveiled en 1926.
