Robert Anning Bell
Maestro del movimento Arts and Crafts
Robert Anning Bell RA è stato un artista e designer inglese. Robert Anning Bell nacque a Londra il 14 aprile 1862, figlio di Robert George Bell, un commerciante di formaggi, e di Mary Charlotte Knight. Studiò alla University College School, al Westminster College of Art e alle scuole della Royal Academy, trascorrendo poi un periodo a Parigi. Bell fu apprendista architetto presso suo zio, Samuel Knight. Al suo ritorno, condivise uno studio con George Frampton. Con Frampton realizzò una serie di progetti per una pala d'altare che fu esposta alla Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society e successivamente installata nella Chiesa di St. Clare a Liverpool. Dal 1895 al 1899, Bell fu istruttore presso la scuola di architettura dell'Università di Liverpool. Durante questo periodo, collaborò con la Della Robbia Pottery a Birkenhead e ottenne un successo crescente come designer di libri e illustratore. Nel 1911 Bell fu nominato capo della sezione di design alla Glasgow School of Art, e dal 1918 al 1924 fu professore di design al Royal College of Art. Continuò a dipingere ed espose alla Royal Academy, al New English Art Club e alla Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours, nonché alla prima mostra della Society of Graphic Art nel 1921. Nel 1921 fu eletto Maestro della Art Workers' Guild. Progettò il grande mosaico nel timpano della Cattedrale di Westminster a partire dagli schizzi lasciati dall'architetto John Francis Bentley; l'opera fu completata nel 1916. Dal 1922 Bell lavorò ai mosaici per il Palazzo di Westminster. Rappresentazioni di San Patrizio d'Irlanda e Sant'Andrea di Scozia furono erette nella Lobby Centrale; nella Sala di Santo Stefano, fu eretto un pannello raffigurante Santo Stefano, Re Stefano e Edoardo il Confessore, e un altro mostrava Edoardo III che presentava il progetto della Cappella di Santo Stefano al suo capomastro, Michael di Canterbury. L'ultimo di questi mosaici fu svelato nel 1926.
