Robert Anning Bell

Robert Anning Bell RA foi um artista e designer inglês. Robert Anning Bell nasceu em Londres em 14 de abril de 1862, filho de Robert George Bell, um comerciante de queijos, e Mary Charlotte Knight. Estudou na University College School, no Westminster College of Art e nas escolas da Royal Academy, passando depois um tempo em Paris. Bell foi aprendiz de arquiteto com seu tio, Samuel Knight. Ao retornar, ele dividiu um ateliê com George Frampton. Com Frampton, criou uma série de projetos para um retábulo que foi exibido na Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society e posteriormente instalado na Igreja de St. Clare, em Liverpool. De 1895 a 1899, Bell foi instrutor na escola de arquitetura da Universidade de Liverpool. Durante esse período, ele se associou à Della Robbia Pottery em Birkenhead e também obteve sucesso crescente como designer de livros e ilustrador. Em 1911, Bell foi nomeado chefe da seção de design na Glasgow School of Art, e de 1918 a 1924 foi professor de design no Royal College of Art. Ele continuou a pintar e expôs na Royal Academy, no New English Art Club e na Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours, bem como na primeira exposição da Society of Graphic Art em 1921. Em 1921, foi eleito Mestre da Art Workers' Guild. Ele projetou o grande mosaico no tímpano da Catedral de Westminster a partir dos esboços deixados pelo arquiteto John Francis Bentley; a obra foi concluída em 1916. Bell trabalhou a partir de 1922 em mosaicos para o Palácio de Westminster. Representações de São Patrício da Irlanda e Santo André da Escócia foram erguidas no Vestíbulo Central; no Salão de Santo Estêvão, um painel foi erguido representando Santo Estêvão, o Rei Estêvão e Eduardo, o Confessor, e outro mostrando Eduardo III apresentando o projeto da Capela de Santo Estêvão ao seu mestre pedreiro, Michael de Canterbury. O último desses mosaicos foi unveiling em 1926.
