Robert Charles Dudley
Famoso por acuarelas marinas victorianas
Nacido en Hackney, Londres, y bautizado en la iglesia de San Juan de Hackney el 27 de septiembre de 1826, Dudley era hijo de una familia acomodada. Su padre, Charles Stokes Dudley de Clonmel, condado de Tipperary, comerciante irlandés de provisiones, escritor y filántropo, figura como «Caballero» en el registro de bautismo de Robert (y también en su certificado de matrimonio). La esposa de Charles era Sarah Dudley, de soltera Haycock, y tuvieron trece hijos en total. [lista de árbol genealógico en Geni] El 4 de agosto de 1859, a los 32 años, Robert Dudley se casó en Liverpool con Amelia (Amy) Hunt, de 26 años. El padre de Amelia, Andrew Lucas Hunt, también era artista [registro matrimonial], al igual que su hermano Alfred William Hunt. En 1857, Alfred había regalado a Robert una acuarela de una escena costera inscrita con la dedicatoria «A R. Dudley, de A.W. Hunt» [registro de subasta], lo que quizás indica el interés de Dudley por el mar, tema de muchas de sus pinturas desde la década de 1860 hasta la de 1890. En el censo de 1861, Dudley figura como «artista pintor». Tras su matrimonio, los Dudley vivieron en el 32 de Sussex Place, Kensington, Londres, donde tuvieron dos hijos: Guildford, nacido en 1860, y Robert Ambrose, nacido hacia 1867. Una carta dirigida a Henry Clifford con fecha de abril de 1868 lleva la dirección de Kensington, pero para el censo de 1871 la familia se había mudado al 31 de Lansdowne Road en Notting Hill, donde Dudley vivió hasta su muerte el 28 de abril de 1909.
