Robert Charles Dudley

Nato a Hackney, Londra, e battezzato nella chiesa di San Giovanni a Hackney il 27 settembre 1826, Dudley era figlio di una famiglia benestante. Suo padre, Charles Stokes Dudley di Clonmel, contea di Tipperary, mercante di generi alimentari irlandese, scrittore e filantropo, è indicato come «Gentiluomo» nel registro di battesimo di Robert (e anche nel suo certificato di matrimonio). La moglie di Charles era Sarah Dudley, nata Haycock, ed ebbero complessivamente tredici figli. [elenco dell'albero genealogico su Geni] Il 4 agosto 1859, all'età di 32 anni, Robert Dudley sposò a Liverpool Amelia (Amy) Hunt, di 26 anni. Il padre di Amelia, Andrew Lucas Hunt, era anch'egli artista [registro dei matrimoni], così come suo fratello Alfred William Hunt. Nel 1857 Alfred aveva regalato a Robert un acquerello raffigurante una scena costiera con la dedica «A R. Dudley da A.W. Hunt» [registro d'asta], il che forse indica l'interesse di Dudley per il mare, soggetto di molti dei suoi dipinti dagli anni Sessanta agli anni Novanta dell'Ottocento. Nel censimento del 1861 Dudley è elencato come «artista pittore». Dopo il matrimonio, i Dudley vissero al 32 di Sussex Place, a Kensington, Londra, dove ebbero due figli: Guildford, nato nel 1860, e Robert Ambrose, nato intorno al 1867. Una lettera indirizzata a Henry Clifford datata aprile 1868 riporta l'indirizzo di Kensington, ma al momento del censimento del 1871 la famiglia si era trasferita al 31 di Lansdowne Road a Notting Hill, dove Dudley visse fino alla sua morte avvenuta il 28 aprile 1909.
