Robert Charles Dudley

Nascido em Hackney, Londres, e batizado na igreja de São João, em Hackney, em 27 de setembro de 1826, Dudley era filho de uma família abastada. Seu pai, Charles Stokes Dudley, de Clonmel, Condado de Tipperary, comerciante de provisões irlandês, escritor e filantropo, consta como «Cavalheiro» no registro de batismo de Robert (e também em sua certidão de casamento). A esposa de Charles era Sarah Dudley, nascida Haycock, e eles tiveram treze filhos no total. [lista da árvore genealógica no Geni] Em 4 de agosto de 1859, aos 32 anos, Robert Dudley casou-se em Liverpool com Amelia (Amy) Hunt, de 26 anos. O pai de Amelia, Andrew Lucas Hunt, também era artista [registro de casamento], assim como seu irmão Alfred William Hunt. Em 1857, Alfred havia presenteado Robert com uma aguarela de uma cena costeira, com a inscrição «Para R. Dudley, de A.W. Hunt» [registro de leilão], o que talvez indique o interesse de Dudley pelo mar, tema de muitas de suas pinturas desde a década de 1860 até a de 1890. No censo de 1861, Dudley está listado como «artista pintor». Após o casamento, os Dudley viveram no 32 Sussex Place, em Kensington, Londres, onde tiveram dois filhos: Guildford, nascido em 1860, e Robert Ambrose, nascido por volta de 1867. Uma carta dirigida a Henry Clifford, datada de abril de 1868, traz o endereço de Kensington, mas na época do censo de 1871 a família havia se mudado para o 31 Lansdowne Road, em Notting Hill, onde Dudley viveu até sua morte em 28 de abril de 1909.
