羅伯特·富爾頓
開創商用汽船與實用潛艇
羅伯特·富爾頓是一位美國工程師和發明家，被廣泛認為是世界上第一艘商業上成功的蒸汽船「北河蒸汽船」（也稱為克萊蒙特號）的開發者。1807年，該蒸汽船在哈德遜河上航行，載著乘客從紐約市到奧爾巴尼再返回，全程300海里（560公里），耗時62小時。他的蒸汽船的成功改變了美國主要河流上的交通和貿易。 1800年，富爾頓受法國領導人拿破崙·波拿巴委託，嘗試設計一艘潛艇；隨後他製造出了「鸚鵡螺號」，這是歷史上第一艘實用的潛艇。富爾頓還被認為發明了世界上最早的一些海軍魚雷，供英國皇家海軍使用。 1777年，富爾頓大約12歲時，拜訪了賓夕法尼亞州蘭開斯特的州代表威廉·亨利，後者對蒸汽機和蒸汽船的構想很感興趣，富爾頓也因此產生了興趣。亨利此前在訪問英國時了解了發明家詹姆斯·瓦特及其瓦特蒸汽機。
