In 1858, Schick began studying at the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin with Wilhelm Schirmer. He spent the period from 1861 to 1862 in Bavaria, mainly in Munich and Brannenburg. Then he continued his studies in Berlin. In the summer of 1864 he received the great State Prize for History Painter for the picture Prometheus Mourned by Oceanus and the Nereids, which allowed him to visit Paris and London. Schick also visited Tyrol and Italy . Em Roma, foi influenciado por Arnold Böcklin. Em 1868, Jacob Burckhardt intermediou o pedido para Karl Sarasin encomendar a Böcklin três afrescos em uma sala de jardim de sua casa em Basileia. Em 1869, Schick retornou a Berlim. De volta à Itália, ele copiou várias pinturas do Renascimento italiano em nome do colecionador de arte Fritz von Farenheid, de Beynuhnen. Schick forneceu 43 ilustrações para a obra «Italy», publicada pela Engelhorn Verlag em Estugarda. Casado em 1879, visitou novamente a Itália com a sua jovem esposa. Faleceu em Berlim oito anos depois.
