桑福德·羅賓遜·吉福德
光色主義光影大師
桑福德·羅賓遜·吉福德是一位美國風景畫家，也是哈德遜河畫派的主要成員之一。吉福德的風景畫以對光線和柔和大氣效果的強調而聞名，他被視為 luminism（光色主義）的實踐者，這是哈德遜河畫派的一個分支風格。 吉福德出生於紐約州格林菲爾德，在紐約州哈德遜度過童年，他是一位鑄鐵廠業主的兒子。1842年至1844年間，他就讀於布朗大學，期間加入了德爾塔菲兄弟會，隨後於1845年離開前往紐約市學習藝術。他在英國水彩畫家和繪畫大師約翰·魯本斯·史密斯的指導下學習素描、透視和解剖學。他還參加了克羅斯比街醫學院的解剖學課程以研習人體結構，並在國家設計學院修習素描課程。到1847年，他的繪畫技藝已足以在國家設計學院展出他的第一幅風景畫；他於1851年當選為副院士，1854年當選為正式院士。此後，吉福德致力於風景畫創作，成為早期哈德遜河畫派最傑出的藝術家之一。
