October in the Catskills
1880
Step right onto this rocky ledge and breathe in that crisp autumn air! Sanford Robinson Gifford, a star of the Hudson River School, mastered a style called 'Luminism' where light itself becomes the main character. Here, he bathes the Catskill Mountains in a hazy, golden glow that makes the distant valleys look like they're melting into the sky. The trees are exploding with fall colors—burnt orange and bright yellow—creating a serene, almost spiritual view of the American wilderness that was all the rage in the 1880s.
