Seymour Joseph Guy fu un pittore romantico americano. Nacque e si formò a Londra, ma si trasferì a New York, dove è noto per le sue opere di genere. Prima di trasferirsi a New York nel 1854, si formò per quattro anni con il pittore ritrattista Ambrosini Jerôme e sposò Anna Maria Barber, figlia di un incisore. Fu membro dello Sketch Club e strinse amicizia con John George Brown; entrambi iniziarono a dipingere opere di genere raffiguranti bambini, probabilmente ispirati dai propri figli, dato che Guy ne ebbe infine nove. Morì nella sua casa a New York il 10 dicembre 1910.
