Shen Mengjian
Realistic Yuan flower-and-bird painter
Shen Mengjian(沈孟坚) was a painter from the Yuan Dynasty, a student of Qian Xuan(钱选) (courtesy name Shunju(舜举)), and was good at painting flowers and birds. His painting style was very realistic. One of his surviving works, 'Peonies and Butterflies,' is considered a treasure among flower-and-bird paintings. The painting is highly realistic, with a clever composition and fine detailing. It balances motion and stillness, bringing the subjects to life, and gives people a sense of elegance, charm, and grandeur. This work carries on the tradition of Song Dynasty court-style painting while incorporating the lively and playful spirit of scholar-painting. It blends the precision of meticulous brushwork with the freedom of expressive ink painting.
