Sheng Maoye
Misty Ming landscapes and figures
Sheng Maoye(盛茂燁), with unknown birth and death years, was a Ming dynasty painter. He went by the names Nian'an(念庵) and sometimes Yan'an(研庵), and was from Changzhou (now Suzhou, Jiangsu). He was mainly active during the Wanli and Chongzhen periods of the Ming dynasty. He was skilled in landscape painting and also did figures, often giving a sense of misty, open forests. In 1607, during the 35th year of Wanli, he created the folding fan 'Pine Sounds in the Pavilion'; in 1626, the 6th year of Tianqi, he painted 'New Year's Exam'; in 1628, the 1st year of Chongzhen, he made the scroll 'Banqiao Rooster Sounds'; and in 1637, the 10th year of Chongzhen, he created 'Autumn and Ancient Trees'. He had artistic exchanges with Ding Yunpeng, Li Shida, Shao Mi, Zhang Hong, and others. The Nanjing Museum holds his landscape album, the Wuxi Museum has 'Banqiao Rooster Sounds,' and the Freer Gallery of Art has the 'Eight Scenes of Xiaoxiang' album.
