Sir Godfrey Kneller

Sir Godfrey Kneller, primo baronetto (nato Gottfried Kniller), fu il principale ritrattista in Inghilterra tra la fine del XVII e l'inizio del XVIII secolo e pittore di corte dei monarchi inglesi e britannici da Carlo II a Giorgio I. Le sue opere principali includono Il convertito cinese (1687; Royal Collection, Londra); una serie di quattro ritratti di Isaac Newton dipinti in diversi momenti della vita di quest'ultimo; una serie di dieci sovrani europei regnanti, tra cui il re Luigi XIV di Francia; oltre 40 «ritratti Kit-Cat» dei membri del Kit-Cat Club; e dieci «bellezze» della corte di Guglielmo III, realizzate per abbinarsi a una serie analoga di dieci amanti di Carlo II dipinta dal predecessore di Kneller come pittore di corte, Sir Peter Lely.
