Sun Junze
Pioneered Zhejiang school, Ma-Xia style
Sun Junze(孙君泽) (birth and death dates unknown), styled Zixiao(子潇), was a painter during the Yuan Dynasty, living in the 14th century, and was from Hangzhou. Sun Junze was skilled in painting landscapes and figures, following the traditions of Southern Song painters Ma Yuan and Xia Gui. His brushwork and artistic charm were similar in style to Ma Yuan. His works include 'Landscape with Figures,' 'Snowy Landscape,' 'Landscape Scroll,' and 'Pavilion Landscape,' among others. 'Landscape with Figures' is kept at the National Palace Museum in Taipei, while the 'Landscape Scroll' is housed at Jingyuan Studio, University of California, Berkeley. Some of his other works can also be found in Japan. In the Zhejiang region, Sun Junze continued the legacy of the Southern Song Ma and Xia landscapes, becoming a pioneer of the Zhejiang school of landscape painting. Very few of his works survive today; they are almost entirely lost in China, with only a handful known to exist abroad.
