Theodor Hildebrandt era un artista tedesco della scuola di pittura di Düsseldorf, specializzato in soggetti letterari e storici. Era anche un noto entomologo. Fu allievo del pittore Schadow e, quando Schadow fu nominato presidente di una nuova accademia nelle province renane nel 1828, seguì il suo maestro a Düsseldorf. Hildebrandt iniziò dipingendo quadri che illustravano opere di Goethe e Shakespeare; ma in questa forma seguiva le tradizioni del palcoscenico piuttosto che le leggi della natura. Realizzò rapidamente «Faust e Mefistofele» (1824), «Faust e Margherita» (1825) e «Re Lear e Cordelia» (1828). È associato alla scuola di pittura di Düsseldorf. Nel 1829 visitò i Paesi Bassi con Schadow e nel 1830 vagò da solo in Italia; ma il viaggio non modificò il suo stile, sebbene lo portasse a coltivare alternativamente l'eclettismo e il realismo. At Düsseldorf, about 1830, he produced "Romeo and Juliet," "Tancred and Clorinda," and other works which deserved to be classed with earlier paintings; but during the same period he exhibited (1829) the "Robber" and (1832) the "Captain and his Infant Son," examples of an affected but kindly realism, which captivated the public, and marked to a certain extent an epoch in Prussian art. The picture which made Hildebrandt's fame is the "Murder of the Children of King Edward" (1836), of which the original, afterwards frequently copied, still belongs to the Spiegel collection at Halberstadt.[clarification needed] Tardi nella sua vita, Hildebrandt sperimentò le sue capacità come pittore storico con dipinti raffiguranti Wolsey ed Enrico VIII, ma ricadde nel romanticismo con «Otello e Desdemona».
