Thomas Carwitham es conocido principalmente por sus bocetos que ilustran escenas de la mitología clásica, procedentes sobre todo de las «Metamorfosis» de Ovidio. En un momento dado, se cree que fue alumno del pintor decorativo Sir James Thornhill, especializándose más tarde en la pintura de arquitectura y escultura ilusionistas.
