Thomas Doughty
Pionnier du paysage atmosphérique américain
Thomas Doughty était un artiste américain associé à l'Hudson River School. Né à Philadelphie, Thomas Doughty fut le premier artiste américain à exercer exclusivement en tant que paysagiste et connut le succès tant grâce à son talent qu'au fait que les Américains tournaient leur intérêt vers le paysage. Il était connu pour ses paysages tranquilles, souvent atmosphériques, des rivières et des montagnes de Pennsylvanie, de New York, de la Nouvelle-Angleterre et surtout de la vallée de l'Hudson. Il apprit la peinture en autodidacte tout en étant apprenti chez un fabricant de cuir. En 1827, il fut élu membre honoraire de la National Academy of Design. Il a principalement travaillé à Philadelphie, mais a également vécu et travaillé à Boston et à New York.
