Thomas Doughty
Pioniere del paesaggio atmosferico americano
Thomas Doughty era un artista americano associato alla Hudson River School. Nato a Filadelfia, Thomas Doughty fu il primo artista americano a lavorare esclusivamente come paesaggista e ottenne successo sia per la sua abilità sia perché gli americani stavano rivolgendo il loro interesse al paesaggio. Era noto per i suoi paesaggi tranquilli, spesso atmosferici, dei fiumi e delle montagne della Pennsylvania, di New York, del New England e, in particolare, della valle dell'Hudson. Imparò a dipingere da autodidatta mentre lavorava come apprendista presso un produttore di cuoio. Nel 1827 fu eletto membro onorario della National Academy of Design. Ha lavorato principalmente a Filadelfia, ma ha anche vissuto e lavorato a Boston e New York.
