Thomas Nast
Padre de la caricatura política
Thomas Nast fue un caricaturista y dibujante editorial estadounidense de origen alemán, a menudo considerado el «Padre de la historieta estadounidense». Fue un crítico del representante demócrata «Jefe» Tweed y de la maquinaria política demócrata de Tammany Hall. Entre sus obras destacadas se encuentran la creación de la versión moderna de Papá Noel (basada en las figuras tradicionales alemanas de Sankt Nikolaus y Weihnachtsmann) y el símbolo político del elefante para el Partido Republicano (GOP). Contrariamente a la creencia popular, Nast no creó al Tío Sam (la personificación masculina del gobierno federal de los Estados Unidos), Columbia (la personificación femenina de los valores estadounidenses) ni al burro demócrata, aunque popularizó estos símbolos mediante sus obras artísticas. Nast estuvo asociado con la revista Harper's Weekly desde 1859 hasta 1860 y desde 1862 hasta 1886.
