Thomas Nast

Thomas Nast era un vignettista e disegnatore editoriale statunitense di origine tedesca, spesso considerato il "padre del fumetto americano". Fu un critico del rappresentante democratico "Boss" Tweed e della macchina politica democratica di Tammany Hall. Tra le sue opere più note vi sono la creazione della versione moderna di Babbo Natale (basata sulle figure tradizionali tedesche di Sankt Nikolaus e Weihnachtsmann) e il simbolo politico dell'elefante per il Partito Repubblicano (GOP). Contrariamente a quanto si crede comunemente, Nast non creò Zio Sam (la personificazione maschile del governo federale degli Stati Uniti), Columbia (la personificazione femminile dei valori americani) né l'asino democratico, sebbene abbia reso popolari questi simboli attraverso le sue opere artistiche. Nast fu associato alla rivista Harper's Weekly dal 1859 al 1860 e dal 1862 al 1886.
