トーマス・ナスト
米国政治漫画の父
トーマス・ナストはドイツ生まれのアメリカ人風刺画家・時事漫画家であり、「アメリカン・カートゥーンの父」としてよく知られている。彼は民主党下院議員で「ボス」トゥイードおよびタマニー・ホールの民主党政治マシンを批判した。彼の代表的な作品には、現代版サンタクロース（伝統的なドイツの聖ニコラウスやヴァイナハツマンに基づく）の創造や、共和党（GOP）の政治的シンボルとしての象のデザインがある。 一般的な誤解とは異なり、ナストは「アンクル・サム」（アメリカ合衆国連邦政府の男性的人格化）、コロンビア（アメリカ的価値観の女性的人格化）、あるいは民主党のロバを創作したわけではありませんが、彼の芸術作品によってこれらのシンボルを広く普及させました。ナストは1859年から1860年まで、そして1862年から1886年まで『ハーパーズ・ウィークリー』誌と関係していました。
