Tōshūsai Sharaku

Tōshūsai Sharaku era un incisore giapponese di stampe ukiyo-e, noto per i suoi ritratti di attori kabuki. Non si conoscono né il suo vero nome né le date di nascita o morte. La sua carriera attiva come artista xilografico durò dieci mesi; la sua produzione prolifica fu disapprovata e la sua attività cessò all'improvviso e misteriosamente, proprio come era iniziata. Le sue opere sono oggi considerate tra le più grandi del genere ukiyo-e. Sharaku realizzò principalmente ritratti yakusha-e di attori kabuki. Le sue composizioni enfatizzano pose dinamiche ed energiche e mostrano un realismo insolito per le stampe dell'epoca: contemporanei come Utamaro rappresentavano i loro soggetti con una bellezza idealizzata, mentre Sharaku non esitava a mostrare dettagli poco lusinghieri. Ciò non incontrò i gusti del pubblico, e la produzione dell'enigmatico artista cessò nel primo mese del 1795. La sua padronanza del mezzo senza un apprendistato apparente ha generato molte speculazioni, e i ricercatori da tempo cercano di scoprire la sua vera identità: tra le decine di ipotesi avanzate, alcune suggeriscono che fosse un poeta oscuro, altre un attore Noh, o addirittura il maestro dell'ukiyo-e Hokusai.
