Virginia Frances Sterrett war eine amerikanische Künstlerin und Illustratorin. Sterrett wurde 1900 in Chicago, Illinois, geboren. Nach dem Tod ihres Vaters zogen sie und ihre Familie nach Missouri, kehrten aber 1915 nach Chicago zurück. Dort besuchte sie die Highschool und trat später mit einem Stipendium in das Art Institute of Chicago ein. Ein Jahr nach ihrem Eintritt in das Institut erkrankte Sterretts Mutter, und Sterrett brach ihr Studium ab, um ihre Familie zu unterstützen. Sie fand Arbeit in einer Kunstwerbeagentur. Sterrett erhielt im Alter von 19 Jahren (kurz nachdem bei ihr Tuberkulose diagnostiziert worden war) ihren ersten Auftrag von der Penn Publishing Company, um Old French Fairy Tales (1920) zu illustrieren, eine Sammlung von Werken der französischen Autorin des 19. Jahrhunderts, Comtesse de Ségur (Sophie Fedorovna Rostopchine). Ein Jahr nach der Veröffentlichung von Altfranzösische Märchen präsentierte die Penn Publishing Company einen neuen Titel mit von Sterrett in Auftrag gegebenen Werken – Tanglewood Tales (1921). Ab 1923 konnte Sterrett aufgrund ihres sich verschlechternden Gesundheitszustands nur noch für kurze Zeiträume an Projekten arbeiten und schloss daher vor ihrem Tod nur einen weiteren Auftrag ab – ihre eigene Interpretation von Tausendundeine Nacht (1928). Ihr bekanntestes Werk ist die Illustrationsreihe zu „Tausendundeine Nacht" (1928). Sie starb an Tuberkulose.
