Virginia Frances Sterrett fue una artista e ilustradora estadounidense. Sterrett nació en Chicago, Illinois, en 1900. Tras la muerte de su padre, ella y su familia se mudaron a Misuri, pero regresaron a Chicago en 1915. Allí, se matriculó en la escuela secundaria y más tarde ingresó en el Instituto de Arte de Chicago con una beca. Un año después de ingresar en el instituto, la madre de Sterrett enfermó y Sterrett dejó los estudios para mantener a su familia. Consiguió trabajo en una agencia de publicidad artística. Sterrett recibió su primer encargo a los 19 años (poco después de que le diagnosticaran tuberculosis) por parte de la Penn Publishing Company para ilustrar Old French Fairy Tales (1920), una colección de obras de la autora francesa del siglo XIX, la condesa de Ségur (Sophie Fedorovna Rostopchine). Un año después de la publicación de Cuentos de hadas en francés antiguo, la Penn Publishing Company presentó un nuevo título que incluía obras encargadas a Sterrett: Cuentos de Tanglewood (1921). A partir de 1923, debido al deterioro de su salud, Sterrett solo pudo trabajar en proyectos durante breves períodos y, como resultado, únicamente completó un encargo adicional antes de su muerte: su propia interpretación de Las mil y una noches (1928). Su obra más conocida es la serie de ilustraciones para Las mil y una noches (1928). Murió de tuberculosis.
