Virginia Frances Sterrett era un'artista e illustratrice americana. Sterrett nacque a Chicago, Illinois, nel 1900. Dopo la morte del padre, lei e la sua famiglia si trasferirono in Missouri, ma tornarono a Chicago nel 1915. Lì, si iscrisse al liceo e in seguito entrò nell'Art Institute of Chicago con una borsa di studio. Un anno dopo il suo ingresso nell'istituto, la madre di Sterrett si ammalò e Sterrett abbandonò gli studi per mantenere la sua famiglia. Trovò lavoro in un'agenzia di pubblicità artistica. Sterrett ricevette la sua prima commissione all'età di 19 anni (poco dopo essere stata diagnosticata con la tubercolosi) dalla Penn Publishing Company per illustrare Old French Fairy Tales (1920), una raccolta di opere dell'autrice francese del XIX secolo, la contessa de Ségur (Sophie Fedorovna Rostopchine). Un anno dopo la pubblicazione di Fiabe in antico francese, la Penn Publishing Company presentò un nuovo titolo che includeva opere commissionate a Sterrett: I racconti di Tanglewood (1921). Dal 1923, a causa del peggioramento della sua salute, Sterrett poté lavorare ai progetti solo per brevi periodi e, di conseguenza, completò soltanto un'altra commissione prima della sua morte: la sua personale interpretazione de Le mille e una notte (1928). La sua opera più nota è la serie di illustrazioni per Le mille e una notte (1928). Morì di tubercolosi.
