Virginia Frances Sterrett was een Amerikaanse kunstenaar en illustrator. Sterrett werd in 1900 geboren in Chicago, Illinois. Na de dood van haar vader verhuisden zij en haar familie naar Missouri, maar keerden in 1915 terug naar Chicago. Daar schreef ze zich in op de middelbare school en trad later met een studiebeurs toe tot het Art Institute of Chicago. Een jaar na haar toelating tot het instituut werd Sterretts moeder ziek en stopte Sterrett met haar studie om voor haar gezin te zorgen. Ze vond werk bij een kunstreclamebureau. Sterrett ontving haar eerste opdracht op 19-jarige leeftijd (kort nadat bij haar tuberculose was vastgesteld) van de Penn Publishing Company om Old French Fairy Tales (1920) te illustreren, een verzameling werken van de 19e-eeuwse Franse auteur, gravin de Ségur (Sophie Fedorovna Rostopchine). Een jaar na de publicatie van Oudfranse Sprookjes presenteerde de Penn Publishing Company een nieuwe titel met in opdracht gemaakte werken van Sterrett: Tanglewood Tales (1921). Vanaf 1923 kon Sterrett vanwege haar verslechterende gezondheid slechts korte perioden aan projecten werken en voltooide zij daarom voor haar overlijden slechts één extra opdracht: haar eigen interpretatie van Duizend-en-één-nacht (1928). Haar bekendste werk is de reeks illustraties voor Duizend-en-één-nacht (1928). Ze overleed aan tuberculose.
