Virginia Frances Sterrett foi uma artista e ilustradora americana. Sterrett nasceu em Chicago, Illinois, em 1900. Após a morte de seu pai, ela e sua família mudaram-se para o Missouri, mas retornaram a Chicago em 1915. Lá, ela se matriculou no ensino médio e mais tarde ingressou no Instituto de Arte de Chicago com uma bolsa de estudos. Um ano após entrar no instituto, a mãe de Sterrett adoeceu e Sterrett abandonou os estudos para sustentar sua família. Ela conseguiu trabalho em uma agência de publicidade artística. Sterrett recebeu sua primeira encomenda aos 19 anos (pouco depois de ser diagnosticada com tuberculose) da Penn Publishing Company para ilustrar Old French Fairy Tales (1920), uma coletânea de obras da autora francesa do século XIX, Condessa de Ségur (Sophie Fedorovna Rostopchine). Um ano após a publicação de Contos de Fadas em Francês Antigo, a Penn Publishing Company apresentou um novo título incluindo obras encomendadas a Sterrett — Contos de Tanglewood (1921). A partir de 1923, com a saúde debilitada, Sterrett só pôde trabalhar em projetos por curtos períodos e, como resultado, concluiu apenas mais uma encomenda antes de sua morte — sua própria interpretação de As Mil e Uma Noites (1928). Sua obra mais conhecida é a série de ilustrações para As Mil e Uma Noites (1928). Ela morreu de tuberculose.
