Elegant Song literati landscape painter
Wang Shen(王诜) (c. 1048–1104), styled Jinqing, was a famous painter and collector of the Northern Song Dynasty. As the husband of the Princess of Shu, daughter of Emperor Yingzong, he mingled widely with literati like Su Shi, Huang Tingjian, and Mi Fu, becoming a key figure in the 'Xiyuan Elegant Gatherings.' His landscape paintings combined the techniques of Li Cheng and Guo Xi, creating a new style known as 'gold-and-blue ink.' His representative works, such as 'Fishing Village in Light Snow' and 'Mist-Shrouded River and Layered Peaks,' are praised for their clarity and elegance. He was also skilled in poetry, calligraphy, and art collecting. Overall, he was a well-rounded artist and an outstanding representative of Northern Song literati painting, leaving a far-reaching influence on later generations.
