Willem van Aelst
Maestro delle nature morte floreali olandesi
Willem van Aelst fu un artista dell'Età dell'Oro olandese specializzato in nature morte con fiori o selvaggina. Van Aelst nacque a Delft in una famiglia di illustri magistrati cittadini. Imparò a dipingere dallo zio, il pittore di nature morte Evert van Aelst. Il 9 novembre 1643 si iscrisse come maestro alla Gilda di San Luca di Delft. Tra il 1645 e il 1649 visse in Francia. Nel 1649 Van Aelst si recò a Firenze, dove prestò servizio come pittore di corte presso Ferdinando II de' Medici, granduca di Toscana. Qui era conosciuto come Guillielmo d'Olanda. In quel periodo, il granduca impiegava anche due connazionali olandesi, Matthias Withoos e Otto Marseus van Schrieck; quest'ultimo, anch'egli pittore di nature morte, probabilmente influenzò lo stile di Van Aelst. Ferdinando II consegnò pubblicamente a Van Aelst una catena d'oro e una medaglia, come testimonianza della sua approvazione e riconoscimento del suo talento. Si è ipotizzato che Van Aelst abbia visitato Roma, dove divenne membro dei Bentvueghels, un'associazione di artisti principalmente olandesi e fiamminghi attivi a Roma. Questa ipotesi si basa, in modo non molto convincente, sulla sua abitudine negli anni 1657/58 di firmare le sue opere con il suo nome seguito da: «alias (e una figura stilizzata disegnata)». Alcuni hanno interpretato questo come un riferimento a un nome di Bent (il soprannome che un membro dei Bentvueghels adottava) – De Vogelverschrikker (in olandese, «spaventapasseri») –, ma non esistono documenti che lo confermino. Nel 1656 tornò nei Paesi Bassi per stabilirsi definitivamente ad Amsterdam. Divenne uno dei più eminenti pittori di nature morte della sua generazione, il che gli permise di vivere sul Prinsengracht. Deve essere morto ad Amsterdam nel 1683 o poco dopo, poiché la sua opera datata più recente risale a quell'anno. Van Aelst insegnò a Rachel Ruysch, Isaac Denies, Maria van Oosterwijck ed Ernst Stuven.
