William Hamilton
Malte Shakespeare-Szenen und illustrierte Gedichte
William Hamilton (1751–1801) war ein englischer Maler und Illustrator. Hamilton wurde in Chelsea, London, geboren, reiste und arbeitete jedoch mehrere Jahre mit Antonio Zucchi in Italien. Er wurde zunächst als architektonischer Zeichner ausgebildet, wandte sich aber bald theatralischen Porträts und Szenen aus Theaterstücken zu. Hamilton wurde 1784 assoziiertes Mitglied der Royal Academy und 1789 Vollmitglied. Hamilton wurde sehr bekannt für seine Gemälde, die Episoden aus Shakespeares Stücken darstellen, sowie für seine Illustrationen von Gedichten. Er wurde beauftragt, Werke für John Boydells Shakespeare-Galerie, Thomas Macklins Bibel und Robert Bowyers Englische Geschichte zu schaffen. Diese wurden in populären Drucken weit verbreitet reproduziert.
