William Hamilton
Peintre de scènes shakespeariennes illustrées
William Hamilton (1751–1801) était un peintre et illustrateur anglais. Hamilton est né à Chelsea, à Londres, mais a voyagé et travaillé en Italie avec Antonio Zucchi pendant plusieurs années. Il s'est d'abord formé comme dessinateur architectural, mais est rapidement passé aux portraits théâtraux et aux scènes de pièces de théâtre. Hamilton est devenu membre associé de la Royal Academy en 1784 et a été nommé membre à part entière en 1789. Hamilton est devenu très connu pour ses peintures représentant des épisodes des pièces de Shakespeare et pour ses illustrations de poèmes. Il a été chargé de créer des œuvres pour la Shakespeare Gallery de John Boydell, la Bible de Thomas Macklin et l'Histoire anglaise de Robert Bowyer. Celles-ci ont été largement reproduites dans des estampes populaires.
