William Hamilton

William Hamilton (1751–1801) fu un pittore e illustratore inglese. Hamilton nacque a Chelsea, Londra, ma viaggiò e lavorò in Italia con Antonio Zucchi per diversi anni. Si formò inizialmente come disegnatore architettonico, ma presto passò ai ritratti teatrali e alle scene di opere teatrali. Hamilton divenne membro associato della Royal Academy nel 1784 e fu nominato membro effettivo nel 1789. Hamilton divenne molto noto per i suoi dipinti che raffiguravano episodi delle opere di Shakespeare e per le sue illustrazioni di poesie. Fu incaricato di creare opere per la Shakespeare Gallery di John Boydell, la Bibbia di Thomas Macklin e la Storia Inglese di Robert Bowyer. Queste furono ampiamente riprodotte in stampe popolari.
