William Hamilton
Schilderde Shakespeare-scènes en illustreerde gedichten
William Hamilton (1751–1801) was een Engelse schilder en illustrator. Hamilton werd geboren in Chelsea, Londen, maar reisde en werkte enkele jaren in Italië met Antonio Zucchi. Hij werd eerst opgeleid als architecturaal tekenaar, maar schakelde al snel over naar theatrale portretten en scènes uit toneelstukken. Hamilton werd in 1784 geassocieerd lid van de Royal Academy en werd in 1789 volwaardig lid. Hamilton werd zeer bekend om zijn schilderijen die episodes uit de stukken van Shakespeare afbeelden en om zijn illustraties van gedichten. Hij kreeg de opdracht om werken te maken voor John Boydells Shakespeare Gallery, Thomas Macklins Bijbel en Robert Bowyers English History. Deze werden wijdverspreid gereproduceerd in populaire prenten.
