Le général William John Chamberlayne est décrit comme soldat, voyageur, peintre et poète. Une série de cinq dessins de Chamberlayne illustrant « Le Barde » de Thomas Gray se trouve au Victoria and Albert Museum à Londres ; Chamberlayne lui-même a rédigé un recueil de poésie intitulé « The Enchanted Land », publié en 1892.
