Yan Wengui
Master of architectural landscapes
Yan Wengui(燕文贵) (967–1044), also known as Yan Wenji, was a painter of the Northern Song Dynasty from Wuxing (modern-day Huzhou, Zhejiang). He excelled in landscapes, buildings, and figures, and was skilled in architectural painting. During the reign of Emperor Taizong of Song, he sold paintings in Bianjing (now Kaifeng) and was recommended by Gao Yiju to enter the Hanlin Painting Academy. Originally, he was affiliated with the military and once served as the registrar of Jun County. His landscapes combined architectural painting techniques, using broken brush strokes, dry brushing, and light washes to depict northern mountains and rivers, decorating them with pavilions and figures in activity, creating a unique 'Yan-style scene.' His work 'Qixi Night Market' depicts street scenes of Bianjing, and 'Sailing Across the Sea' portrays boats on waves. Surviving pieces include 'Mountains and Pavilions by the Stream' (National Palace Museum, Taipei) and 'Rivers and Pavilions' (Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts, Japan). Song critic Liu Daochun praised his 'Yan-style scenes' as unparalleled, while Yuan critic Qian Weishan called the realms in his paintings 'a scene not of this world.'
